This competition for a new construction and refurbishment of the Warsaw-based Schindler Headquarters was organized by SARP (Polish Architecture Chamber), Warsaw and Schindler, one of the world’s leading manufacturer of lifts. The site is located at the corner of the "Postepu" and "Cybernetyki" street. The site hosts currently five buildings from which one supposed to be converted and the other four demolished. The newly designed building was thought to be connected with the existing one and have the opportunity to be extended in the future. One of the most important requirements for Schindler was to meet the Swiss standard "Minergie - P “, which is a strict rating on the energy efficiency of buildings.
The program included mainly office spaces, a warehouse, a customer service centre, a canteen and repair shops.
Our design proposal offered a compact and intelligent building box, which was based on an optimised simple geometry for the most efficient environmental performance. Corresponding to the principles of branding of Schindler we created a building that signalises purity of form, materials and colours and emerges as corporate identity for the company.
The glassed and closed surfaces of the building were optimally directed to save energy through solar gain.
A sophisticated moving louver system controlled by a BMS system is opening the blinds during the day and closing them at night times. On the edge of these blinds we implemented an LED system with up and down moving lights, which symbolises the product that is mainly sold by Schindler.
Our proposed design, a compact rectangular block, wraps the existing building into a new "eco-crust" to create the ideal energy efficient conditions for both of them. The double skin façade with triple glazing, internal air flow control and moving sun blinds controlled by BMS allows the most efficient use of natural energy for the building. Photovoltaic panels on the roof are collecting solar energy. In the warehouse is a point for charging the battery for electric vehicles from renewable sources (solar battery).
Savings of the maintenance costs for the building reaching up to 60% compared to the normal building consumption. The achieved rates fulfilling the passive building standard and are calculated in the range of 0.1 - 0.15 W/m²K.
